Frequently asked questions

Where can you exchange baht for dollars?

At the large licensed chains. Street exchangers often give a poor rate for the reverse direction.

Do they handle large amounts?

Yes, licensed chains also handle large amounts, and the rate for them is usually better.

When is it worth exchanging baht for dollars?

When cash baht is left over before departure or you need hard currency for onward travel. It is better to check the rate in advance than to change what is left at the airport.

Will they give new large banknotes?

At large chains, usually yes. New large banknotes are more convenient to carry onward and are better accepted in other countries, so ask about this when you place the request.

How to exchange baht to dollars well

Exchanging baht for dollars is in demand among those travelling further around Asia or wanting to keep their savings in hard currency. The rate for this direction is kept close to the market, but at small exchangers it can be lowered.

A licensed chain will accept cash baht and pay out dollars in cash or cashless. For a large amount the rate is agreed in advance, and the transaction is locked in when you place the request, so you see the total before the deal.

Most often the reverse exchange is needed before departure, when cash baht is left over. Changing it at the airport is not worth it, so it is better to do it in advance in the city or online, where the rate is closer to the market.

If you need the dollars for onward travel or for savings, ask for new large banknotes: they are more convenient and better accepted in other countries. Mention this when you place the request.
